This March, a group of secondary school students decided to spend their spring break by going to school. But not just any school, they participated in the SWEAT program at the Art Institute of Vancouver where they collaboratively created an incredible film over the course of 4 short days. Witness the challenges the cast and crew faced in this high pressure, low oxygen environment and find out just what exactly SWEAT stands for in this documentary about the Art Institute of Vancouver's world-renowned work experience program. Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun Public Lecture November 10, 2017 Sponsored by SFU's Institute for the Humanities. SPEAKER Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun graduated from the Emily Carr School of Art and Design in 1983 with an honours degree in painting. Yuxweluptun's strategy is to document and promote change in contemporary Indigenous history in large-scale paintings (from 54.2 x 34.7cm to 233.7 x 200.7cm), using Coast Salish cosmology, Northwest Coast formal design elements, and the Western landscape tradition. His painted works explore political, environmental, and cultural issues. His personal and socio-political experiences enhance this practice of documentation. Yuxweluptun's work has been included in numerous international group and solo exhibitions, such as INDIGENA: Contemporary Native Pers...

Danish architect Bjarke Ingels delivered the Royal Academy's 25th Annual Architecture Lecture in the unique setting of the RA Summer Exhibition. Bjarke Ingels is one of the world’s most exciting architects. His approach to design is to begin with the question, ‘What is the biggest problem – what is the greatest potential?’ He finds the answer through careful analysis of everything from local cultures and climates and ever-changing patterns of contemporary everyday life, to the ebbs and flows of the global economy. The result is an information-driven architecture, innovative in both programme and technology, which stands as the material counterpart to the rapidly evolving realities of the twenty-first-century digital economy and digital communication networks. Projects covered in this t...
May 19, 2017 Co-presented by SFU's Vancity Office of Community Engagement, Museum of Vancouver, Western Front, SFU Faculty for Communication, Technology and Art, SFU Institute for the Humanities, SFU School for the Contemporary Arts, SFU Urban Studies Program, and UBC School of Architecture + Landscape Architecture. The worldwide crisis of a dramatic lack of affordable housing — even in affluent cities such as Vancouver and Vienna — is part of a larger urban crisis that is based on speculation of urban land, the re-distribution of wealth from the poor to the rich, and on the collectivization of losses and the privatization of gains characteristic of neoliberalism. Hey, this is where all those smart people go, right? We are driving around the University of British Columbia. For those that commute from the south of Vancouver, there is a nice highway to enter the university. To the right of this highway is Pacific Spirit Regional Park. Be careful not to get lost late at night here. At 4:16, there is TRIUMF, a physics research place. As you can see by the construction around 4:35, this is a "new-ish" area for people to live. At 8:54 we are in the campus. The left side is designated for "sports" related activities. On the right at 9:23, you'll notice a RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) vehicle pull out of its station. Sometimes they have to break up fights among students on campus while on horseback. At 12:37 (left), there is the university boo...
